Solid state capacitive energy storage using the high dielectric permittivity and low dielectric loss ceramics are gaining intensive research interests due to the potential applications in power electronics, high speed energy converting or buffering, back-up power sources, and hybrid electrical energy technologies. Ferroelectrics (FEs), antiferroelectrics (AFEs), relaxors, superparaelectrics (SPEs), and a combination/mixture of them have shown the desirable dielectric energy storage performance. Both bulk ceramics (including multilayer ceramic capacitors/MLCC) and ceramic film capacitors are being investigated for their energy storage capabilities and energy efficiencies. The key performance figure at the fundamental research level, is the polarization-electric field (P-E) hysteresis loop that can be directly measured from these materials. Reduction of the remnant polarization, delayed polarization saturation or AFE-FE transition, and the enhancement of the electrical breakdown strength, etc., are some of the representative approaches to obtain a slim, extended P-E loop for an optimal energy storage performance, and the stability of P-E hysteresis loop with electric field and time are important for applications. This symposium is focused on achieving such a goal via designing nano- and micro-structures or strain status, using novel doping or solid solution techniques, and inventing novel measurement technologies as well as solving engineering problems preventing commercialization of this technology.
